MONTGOMERY AL- Tying it all together after all these years, the City of Montgomery is claiming the Wright Brothers aviation "first" for all to see.  On July 2, 2013 at 10:00 am a new icon for Montgomery will be dedicated. A 42-foot-wide replica of the Wright brothers' first plane, a full-scale steel replica of the brothers flyer will welcome visitors to Alabama's capital. The flyer will sit at the summit of what is now Overlook Park, held aloft by a series of support poles and facing the overpass that leads to Maxwell Air Force Base. There, the Wrights opened the nation's first civilian flying school and made a first night flight. The ceremony will include a tribute to Maxwell Air Force Base and the history of flight in Montgomery.

Lighted at night, you will be able to see the Wright Brothers Monument from southbound I-65 just before you enter Montgomery proper from over the river. Overlook Park is located at the Herron Street exit on Maxwell Blvd and North Holt Street. In addition to the new monument a grant allowed improvements to the park.  -Staff report
