MONTGOMERY
AL- Tying it all together after all these years, the City of Montgomery is
claiming the Wright Brothers aviation "first" for all to see. On July 2, 2013 at 10:00 am a new icon for
Montgomery will be dedicated. A
42-foot-wide replica of the Wright brothers' first plane, a full-scale steel replica of the brothers
flyer will welcome visitors to Alabama's capital. The flyer will sit at the
summit of what is now Overlook Park, held aloft by a series of support poles
and facing the overpass that leads to Maxwell Air Force Base. There, the
Wrights opened the nation's first civilian flying school and made a first night
flight. The ceremony will include a tribute to Maxwell Air Force Base and the
history of flight in Montgomery.
