The listing was in recognition of the airports contribution to the US mobilization effort during WWII. The airport, now known as Wetumpka, was one of 7 satellite fields supporting Gunner Army Airfield's mission of training pilots for WWII. It is the only one still in operation, including Gunner Field.
A cookout preceded the meeting, which included a discussion of the accomplishments this year and planning for the future. The ECAA was formed in 2011 to unite people who actually use the airport for business and recreation after local elected officials made it apparent they thought the airport land would be better used as yet one more industrial park. After more than two years, the city of Wetumpka recently issued a press release stating that the city has decided the airport will remain where it has been for 70 years and will now support it's continued growth as the busiest general aviation facility in Alabama.
ECAA is an Alabama nonprofit corporation and welcomes all the support it can muster from interested citizens, membership is only $15 per year. Details are at ECAA website, www.ecaa08a.org.
