PELL CITY AL- Local Veterans will benefit from a Fly In fundraiser organized by MAPS, a grass-roots non-profit organization called Military Assistant Personal Support. According to Lenny Merritt, a pilot and MAPS member, local tradesmen began to hear about Vets who needed help with wheel chair ramps, shower handrails, other home projects and began pitching in their skills to do what was needed.  One call from the Sheriff's office involved a vehicle break down from a Vet that needed assistance getting back on the road. Often area Churches refers to MAPS so the community works together and helps their Veterans wherever they can. Money raised from the Fly In will provide materials for MAPS to continue to provide assistance.

Merritt, the event coordinator, says a giant poster will be available for everyone to sign supporting their Vets. This poster will be sent to the Pentagon and could be seen in their publication, Star and Stripes. Everyone will be able to help in some way and have a great Fly In on Saturday too.

Hosted at the Pell City Airport, 3 miles SE of Town, the free event starts at 10:00am on Saturday, March 16 with aircraft displays: EMS Helicopter, Alabama State Trooper, Civil Air Patrol and Wallace State Flight School. Biplane Rides will be available in a 1943 Stearman, kids inflatables, vendors including Hamburgers and Bar B Q. Live music begins from 3:00pm until 5:00pm. Due to limited airport parking, please plan to car park and ride at the Pell City Civic Center, where shuttle service is available to the airport.

Donations will be cheerfully accepted. -B Meyer, Saint Clair County Airport (PLR)
