General Aviation Powerhouse of Alabama

The Alliance for Aviation Across America recently launched a wide-scale economic impact survey to outline the benefit of general aviation on businesses, local economies and communities around the nation.



General aviation in Alabama is an integral part of the state's economy.  Numerous companies in Alabama rely this type of transportation to conduct their daily business.  Furthermore, industries such as tourism continue to grow in the state because of this vital industry.

AVIATION BY THE NUMBERS- Alabama is home to 281 total airports (of which 172 are privately owned). Of the 98 publicly owned airports, only six offer commercial service.

Alabama is home to 7,728 pilots and 5.595 general aviation aircraft.

NUMBER OF JOBS- There are 73,140 jobs directly and indirectly created by general aviation in Alabama.

ECONOMIC IMPACT- Total economic output for all direct, indirect and imputed economic impact is $4.7 billion, or $370 per capita.  Additionally, an Alabama Department of Transportation study found that for every dollar invested in the aviation system, approximately $163 is returned to Alabama's economy.
 
Alabama is home to 20 charter flight companies, 57 repair stations, and 6 flight schools operating 47 aircraft and providing 87 jobs. In addition, there are 66 fixed-based operators in the state.  Both Auburn University in Auburn, AL and Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, AL have aviation programs and are members of the University Aviation Association.
