Alabama's Newest Master Pilot

ALBERTVILLE AL- At a special ceremony during a FAASTeam GPS Seminar, Waylon Lyons received his Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. Tom Mullins with Birmingham- NW Florida FAASTeam presented the award at the Alabama Aviation Center last Monday.

Lyons, a nearly 19,000 hour pilot, experienced in both fixed and rotor wing, first soloed a J-3 Cub in 1952. He has worked as a flight line mechanic, helicopter and fixed wing flight instructor both military and civilian, a chief pilot for offshore oil companies and an FAA Safety Counselor.

In 1989, he opened Lyons Airpark near Rainsville, Alabama where he continues to enjoy private flying. He published two aviation books, Hillbilly in the Gulf- 1997 and Blue Skies of Texas- 1999 and is credited with numerous awards.

 The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award recognizes pilots who have demonstrated professionalism, skill and aviation expertise by maintaining safe operations for 50 or more years. Recipients are awarded a certificate and a lapel pin and are recognized in the FAA Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award - Roll of Honor located online, at FAASafety.gov.
