On Friday, South Alabama will see a new remembrance in honor of the thousands who died or were wounded on Dec. 7, 1941. During a ceremony starting at 10 a.m., the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort will be dedicated. The 120 Acre facility will be the first of its kind. Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Clyde Marsh will address the public.

Later in the day, at Battleship Memorial Park on the Causeway, organizers at the USS Alabama will observe a moment of silence at 11:55 a.m.to honor those who died or were wounded at Pearl Harbor. In Hawaii it will be 7:55 a.m., almost 71 years to the minute from when the attack started on the Pacific Fleet.
VFW Post 1349 will conduct a U.S. Flag retirement ceremony on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 2 p.m. Honored guests will be V.A. Hospital patients from both Montgomery and Tuskegee veteran's facilities. The public is invited to attend. Ceremony will be conducted at 1077 S. Memorial Drive (VFW Post 1349) in Prattville, AL.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3128 in Fort Payne will hold a special ceremony to remember the American military personnel killed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. The ceremony will be at G.E. Hill Bridge on Highway 35 overlooking Little River Canyon on Friday at 11 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be at the Little River Canyon Center.
On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, the American Army and Navy base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy. The attack came as a surprise to the American Army and Navy and lead to great losses of life and equipment. More than 2000 American citizens were killed and more than 1000 were injured. The Americans also lost a large proportion of their battle ships and nearly 200 aircraft that were stationed in the Pacific region. More than 60 Japanese servicemen were killed, injured or captured. The Japanese Navy also lost five midget submarines and 29 aircraft. Pearl Harbor Day remembers those Americans who gave their life that day.
