COLUMBUS AFB, MS- Pilots from Mississippi and Alabama flew to Columbus Air Force Base for a FAASTeam seminar last Saturday. About 24 civilian aircraft descended on the military base. Weather and Flight Safety presentations highlighted the meeting.
In addition to informational courses, participants had the opportunity to try their skill in the T-1 (Beech 400) or the Texan II simulator. A course scenario allowed you to depart McCarron, fly the strip at 200 AGL, climb, a max turn and back thru the strip. If successful then a touch and go at Nellis followed by a full stop back at McCarron.
Pilots divided into three groups for a base tour in busses. RAPCON, Display area, the old SAC Ramp where B-52's of the 60's stood ready to launch, the simulator building and a close up look at the B1B bomber.
A final departure and weather brief noted the departure window would be 30 minutes for 20 aircraft. What a great way to earn 5 Wings credits. -Fred Masterson contributed to this article.
