AUBURN UNIVERSITY AL- Threatening clouds
couldn't keep thousands of aviation-minded spectators from the 2013 Auburn
Opelika Air Show Saturday. Lee County Commissioner Judge Bill English and
Auburn Mayor Bill Ham welcomed the crowd and thanked the sponsors and
volunteers for helping put on the event.
Tuskegee Team parachutists opened the flying acts which included Tiger Airshow Yak 55 aerobatics, Greg Koontz's fabulous J-3 Cub and Decathlon flying, Wayne Roberts in the Extra 330, Sky Soldiers AH-1H Cobra demo and many other flying acts.
"City of Tuskegee" By Request P-51C and P-47 "Hun Hunter", one of the few surviving flying Thunderbolts thrilled the crowd with multiple fly bys. A special attraction was the "Rise Up" mobile theater presentation about the famed Tuskegee Airmen. A fantastic flying day for all at AUO!
Organizers estimate 7,000 people turned out at the Auburn University Regional Airport for the 2013 Auburn-Opelika Air Show, the first air show to take place at the Auburn airport since 1984 following a series of fly-ins between 2003 and 2010. Based on the turn out, the air show could be an annual or biannual event, say organizers. -contributed to Alabama Aviator by Al Allenback
