Pell City ALABAMA - A few "good men" on a mission set about to help their neighbors, military veterans, in need. Out of their actions, M.A.P.S. was born and is quickly becoming a model that could go statewide. MAPS, Military Assistance Personal Support, brings the community and resources together for the benefit of local Veterans, current Military members and their families.

Members provide wheel chair ramps, shower handrails, and other projects that make life better for those in need using their own building materials. Saturday MAPS held a fundraiser aviation event at the Pell City, St Clair County airport to provide more funds for needed project materials.

"The turn out exceeded our expectations," said Lenny Merritt, Fly In event organizer and MAPS member. The pilot and vet, based at the airport saw the Fly In as a way to honor all military aviation units and tell their story. Captain Otto Fox took to the stage and told a crowd of over 1,000 during the day, how he and Matt Bein will take their message to Washington, D.C.  "Your support here today will be shared around the world, today is a great day for our St. Clair County Veterans."

People attending could send a message by signing the back of a huge banner that will go to Washington supporting Vets.

Highlighting the activities was Helicopter rides for a $20 donation, flown by Police Chief Turley, also a member of the airport board. Wallace State Aviation donated the use of their Schweizer 300.

Stearman biplane rides were available, popular and many people went for a 20-minute ride over the city. For the younger ones a full complement of inflatable play stations was on site.

Civil Air Patrol, who assisted with traffic, had an aircraft on display and an exhibit to interest future members. An impressive array of Emergency vehicles from Pell City including, a fire truck and command station delighted children. The Red Cross participated, as did the Hoover Police Aviation Division with their helicopter on display. Joining Community Forces and sponsor was Lakeside Behavioral Services and Hospice who helped many Vets attend Saturday's event.

Huggies prepared their famous Burgers and Dogs and the popular Leverton Brothers Band in concert made for great family entertainment. Although the event was free, donations were cheerfully accepted. Numerous local sponsors covered the cost of the event all proceeds went to MAPS.

Several pilots from around the area flew in and out providing an interesting mix of aircraft. Based on this first effort success, MAPS is planning to repeat the Fly In next year. -B Meyer, FMI about MAPS volunteers and events: 205/884-1111
