Alabama Airports Need ASN Volunteers

The purpose of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Airport Support Network is to Promote, Protect, and Defend America's Community Airports. AOPA's goal is to have an Airport Support Network (ASN) volunteer at every public-use airport in the United States.

Often, the general aviation community is totally unaware of what's boiling in the pot concerning their airport-until it is too late to turn the tide. Knowing what's happening in the political environment surrounding a local airport is of the utmost importance if we are going to preserve our general aviation infrastructure into the foreseeable future. The more time available in which to counter negatives about a local airport, the higher the possibility for preserving the airport or avoiding restrictions.

The AOPA Airport Support Network provides the vehicle for AOPA members to work in concert with AOPA to establish that early warning system. AOPA will appoint one member who will act as a volunteer and be their "eyes and ears" at every public-use airport across the United States.

AOPA has always been a powerful and effective advocate for general aviation airports, and your help is important. The AOPA AIRPORT SUPPORT NETWORK currently has nearly 2,500 member volunteers. These local aviators have volunteered to help AOPA learn about local airport opportunities and issues at the grass-roots level. AOPA provides ASN volunteers with resources and information through a dedicated website and when needed, AOPA headquarters staff and our Regional Representative, Bob Minter, work with them personally.

"It's a great partnership and AOPA ASNV's are making a real difference as we work to promote, protect and defend general aviation and our airports across this nation.
I especially appreciate it when an ASN Volunteer can provide a personal introduction to a local leader or Legislator who can help with regulatory and legislative issues that impact aviation," says Minter.

As we are about to begin the 2013 legislative sessions, I am reminded that there are some airports in Alabama, listed below, that do not currently have an AOPA ASN Volunteer. AOPA needs your help. As we welcome in the coming year, please help Bob Minter identify good people who can make a real difference at your airport.
