EVERGREEN ALABAMA- Gray skies and cool temperatures didn't dampen the fun and enthusiasm at Middleton Field last Saturday for the annual South East Regional Fly In. Aircraft from across the spectrum of general aviation were represented. People dressed for warmth and shrugged off the cold as judges looked over award worthy aircraft.
Reports indicate Evergreen Mayor Pete Wolff was everywhere, and received many positive compliments from pilots and visitors on the city's hosting of the event. A Robinson R44 made countless sorties giving many their first airborne look at the event. Chapter 822's mini simulator had the most "take-offs and landings" with the gusty winds on the field.
Capturing both the Grand Champion and WarBird Champion was Travis Capps of Greenville, Alabama in his Stearman N2S-3 Ns4878N. All awards for 2012 may be found on the SERFI website.
SERFI veterans noted attendance was lower than normal, weather being an issue. However, Chip Maypoles, event volunteers and the city were already planning next year's fly in, pre-ordering sunny skies. Details for 2013 will be on the SERFI website. -Al Allenback, Fred Masterson and Hillis Cunliffe, article contributors. FMI: SERFI
