NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS - Civil Air Patrol has secured the number of co-sponsors needed for committee action on its proposal for a Congressional Gold Medal recognizing its early members' service during World War II.
Once the Banking, House and Urban Affairs Committee acts on the bill, the next steps are a full vote in the Senate. The measure then goes to the House for action. All of this should occur in the next several months.
Maj. Gen. Chuck Carr, CAP national commander, hailed this "major milestone," crediting members' and other supporters' "tenacity and hard work" and expressing "heartfelt thanks for a job exceptionally well done" in a message to leaders throughout the organization.
"It's been a long and arduous process, but the very best is yet to come! When the medal is approved, we can all take pride in the national spotlight that will shine, not only on the contributions to America of our founding members, but also on the exceptional work that each of you does every day," Carr said.
The work isn't over, though, the national commander said.
"Obviously, while we are at critical juncture in ensuring passage of the bills, we still need additional co-sponsors in both the Senate and House so that once the bill comes up for a vote, it will easily pass," he added.
"I am requesting that each of you keep this critical national project at the forefront of your priorities," he said.
He also called for continued diligence in ensuring early members' Congressional Gold Medal eligibility. He asked that CAP's wing commanders assign appropriate individuals in their wings to check this online listing.
In addition, possible candidates should immediately be contacted "to ensure no deserving person is left out of the Congressional Gold Medal process," Carr said. -CAP News
